In their first scrimmage game together, the Jersey Express edged the New York Cosmos 1-0 at Lubetkin Field on Wednesday June15.
The game commenced effervescently with both teams having equal ball possession. Crisp and aesthetic passes were being made as well as rugged yet timely tackles were enforced. It wasn’t until the 16 minute when Express’ forward Malijani Samson struck the cross bar with a scintillating overhead kick. The “ooo’s and aaah’s” from the crowd were a testament as to how close he was to scoring. As the game progressed, Cosmos’ Stefan Dimitrov (former Chicago Fire player) and Mike Grella (former Leeds United forward) tried to penetrate the Express’ defense but to no avail. In the 31 minute, Express took the lead. The ubiquitous Abdoulaye Couilibally was brought down in the penalty area and midfielder Angser Otto stepped up and converted from the spot.
Express’ custodian, Ryan Meara, was called upon to make some timely saves in the second half but never fell short brilliance. He continues to maintain his excellent form with the help of a combative and intelligent backline marshaled by Shawn Foster.
The Express and Cosmos meet again in July for another scrimmage.
