The two-time NCAA defending champions are back in business at the 2017 College Cup, as the Stanford Cardinal are one of four teams to reach the national semifinals.

After defeating Clemson in the 2015 Championship match and Wake Forest on penalties last season, the Cardinal defeated the Demon Deacons for the third consecutive tournament in the 2017 quarterfinals to book their place in the final four. The Cardinal are seeking to become the second team in NCAA history to three-peat as champions, following Virginia’s four consecutive titles from 1991-1994.

While the Cardinal’s top-ten offense has produced a fantastic 45 goals this season, Stanford has really made its name on the defensive end of the field. While allowing only nine goals all year, Stanford’s goals-against average of 0.420 is second only to fellow semifinalist Indiana. The Cardinal are likewise second in shutouts and save percentage.

The Cardinal rolled through the regular season, boasting a fantastic 15-2-1 record to earn the No. 9 overall seed in the NCAA tournament while claiming yet another Pac-12 title, its fourth consecutive conference championship.

Now, Stanford takes aim at a third consecutive and third overall NCAA title to continue the team’s recent success. To get to another final, they’ll need to first get through the Akron Zips in Friday’s College Cup opener.

Here’s a closer look at the 2017 Stanford Cardinal season.
